Outdoor Activities & Sports

The island is ideal for serious and casual sport training on land and sea. There are multiple marked roads for mountain biking and trekking trails which crisscross the island through a variety of terrain and groves of fig and olive trees.

Iz is blessed with favorable southerly and westerly winds to accommodate windsurfing and sailing. In addition, there are areas around the island perfect for seakayaking and swimming - where the sea is always calm due to Iz being surrounded by 15 islands. Do not be surprised to see the occasional water polo game being played along the shore.

In Veli Iz there is a modern fully-equipped marina. Tennis and basketball courts are also nearby as well as a bakery and a couple of markets for dry goods and fresh produce.

Be aware there is no bank teller on island and the only place to exchange money is at the post office.

Iz is truly a pearl in Zadar archipelago. It is one of eighteen islands on the doorstep of three national parks. Kornati National Park, made up of over 300 islands, is the crown jewel of the Adriatic and just six-mile boat ride away.

Islands of Kornati – the islands have no spring water, only rainwater collected in waterholes. The unique feature of the islands lies in their rugged shores with many caves and coves. The landscape of chalk limestone is covered with bushes of rosemary, juniper, lavender, thyme, myrtle and sage. Pathways leading to steep and huge cliffs facing the open sea and others gently decline towards the sea, ending in a small bay with a jetty and one or two fishermen’s cottages surrounded by pine, olives and fig trees…

Two other national parks on the mainland, Krka and Paklenica, are within 50 miles and can easily be reached for a day’s excursion.

Listen to the Sea Organ!
The Sea Organ has become a modern icon of Zadar. The currents of waves and their passage through musical pipes, installed beneath the surface of the sea, create an amazing sound filling the seaside promenade. Pure magic! Like?

We also recommend excursions to the biggest lake in Croatia - Vransko Jezero (Lake) and the Zrmanja River Canyon which is one of the most beautiful canyons in Europe.

You can also have wonderful day in National park Plitvice lake – Plitvice Lakes are composed of 16 interlinked lakes between the mountains of Mala Kapela and Plješivica in the region of Lika. Climate is alpine. The water temperature in Prošćansko lake and Kozjak reaches even 24°C in summer. The whole region is covered with snow from November till the end of March; the lakes are frozen in December and January offering a magical view on the winter landscape.
